Robbins Landon has some rather harsh words about the D Major Concerto in comparison to the Concerto in C: “In every respect the earlier C Major Cello Concerto by Haydn is far more interesting for the listener: the Finale generates an electric tension of which the D Major work never even has a spark” (Robbins Landon 1978, 571).
